National Empowerment Center

I’ve been the webmaster for NEC since 2004. At the time, the website was not considered “accessible” which is a big deal for any organization that gets most of its funding from the government. Back then, the state of the art in web design was to create a table based website, with CSS (cascading style sheets) to manage the look and feel.

After taking the website live in 2005, we created the NEC Store, using Miva Merchant software which was installed on the server (visit the store).

The website grew considerably since then, now including well over 200 pages, and probably as many documents.

NEC has considerable original content, resources, links to many website, and likewise many websites link to NEC. As a result, NEC has a global Alexa ranking of 1,728,990 (out of billions of websites) and ranked 379,090th in United States.

Since Google is now penalizing websites that are not “Responsive”, we will be rebuilding the website soon. We have decided to go with WordPress, and will use WooCommerce to run the store.

See it Live!
